Fasting is a deeply personal spiritual practice. It requires discipline of the body and focus of the mind. The reason we fast is to deepen our connection with God. And while fasting is not required, it is often recommended.
There are many reasons we fast, but it is important to remember that during a fast, the focus is entirely on God. Intentionality is key while fasting. If you desire to grow closer to God, take the focus off yourself and put it on Him, or perhaps re-align yourself with His will, then you might consider giving it a try.
We fast when seeking His guidance. We fast as a form of repentance. We fast to show solidarity or as a form of mourning. What we do not fast for is attention.
“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:17–18 NIV
Is Fasting Relevant Today?
In the Old Testament, fasting was primarily practiced as a form of devotion or when seeking divine intervention. Though it may not be compulsory, it is still relevant today, and many Christians still practice it.
Fasting is voluntary and should not be done as a mere formality but rather out of an intense desire to honor God. You should not fast to impress others or prove your righteousness. This is why, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus cautions us, saying, “When you fast, do not look somber like the hypocrites do.” Matthew 6:16 NIV
Fasting requires heartfelt obedience and should not be done to compensate for deliberate sinful behavior. Fasting is a discipline aimed at transformation, and true repentance is acknowledging your wrongdoings, expressing genuine remorse, and making an effort to amend your ways.
What Happens When You Fast?
While it may be uncomfortable, I’ve often felt refreshed after a fast. Fasting allows you to empty yourself spiritually and open the door for God to come in and fill you. As a result, you become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
Fasting is an expression of genuine piety and sincerity for the things of God. Humility, honesty, and integrity are at the core of this act of obedience. It’s more than just giving up something. It’s about submitting to the will of God and aligning your desires with His purpose. From my experience, it’s a joyful act of love and sacrifice that produces many fruits.
What Are The Benefits Of Fasting?
During times of fasting, I find solace in one particular verse that holds special significance to me, serving as a focal point for meditation and reflection.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6: 35 NIV
If you aspire to build an authentic love relationship with God, fasting will help you develop greater intimacy and self-discipline. It brings spiritual renewal and empowerment. Anyone who has ever fasted will tell you that it is challenging; however, the sacrifice is well worth the rewards. Below, I’ve listed some of the benefits of fasting:
Hear Clearly the Will of God: By quieting your mind and your heart, you will be able to discern God’s voice in the stillness. Daniel is an example of a servant of God who fasted to understand God’s will. (Daniel 9:3–4)
Power to Overcome Temptation and Be Delivered from the Enemy: Fasting can strengthen you spiritually, empowering you to resist temptation and overcome the schemes of the enemy. By denying your flesh through fasting, you can cultivate greater self-discipline and reliance on God’s strength to resist evil. (Matthew 4:1-11)
Prepare a Sacrifice That Delights God: With the right motives and attitude, fasting becomes a pleasing aroma to God, symbolizing a heart surrendered to Him. Fasting can be an offering that demonstrates your humility, sincerity, and devotion. (Isaiah 58:6-7)
Experience the Transformative Power of God: Fasting opens a door for God to work powerfully in your life, bringing about transformation and breakthrough. It allows him to make everything new. Because fasting brings you into the presence of God, it leads to personal growth and revival. It is an opportunity to return to God with all your heart. (Joel 2:12-13)
Obtain Spiritual Knowledge and Enhance Your Prayer Life: Lastly, fasting can deepen your understanding of God’s word, growing your spiritual knowledge. By devoting focused time to prayer and study during fasting, you will grow in intimacy with God and gain insights into His truths.
Fasting yields numerous spiritual benefits. These benefits are exemplified throughout Scripture and continue to be relevant for believers today. This is not merely another Christian tradition. It is a real way to draw closer to God. It is a genuine opportunity to express your love for God through obedience, adding another dimension to your faith and your relationship with Him.
